Montwaun Young grew up in the foothills of Greensboro in North Carolina. He attended The University of North Carolina Wilmington and obtained a B.S. in Chemistry in 2010. Following graduation, Montwaun worked as an environmental chemist analyzing soil and water samples for contaminants. He then gained employment as a certifying scientist where he performed highly complex operations to test and confirm the presence or absence of illicit drugs and drugs of abuse using a variety of analytical instrumentation. In 2015, he acquired his M.S. degree in Chemistry from Tennessee State University where his research focused primarily on the catalysis and structural characterization of transition-metal pincer ligand complexes. Realizing that his passion for analytical chemistry needed to advance to the next level, Montwaun joined Prof. Shelley’s research group at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 2016.
