Abstract:
Dynamically induced liquefaction of saturated
medium-dense sand strata overlain by low permeability silt layer is
studied in centrifuge tests. Level site and embankment simulations
are conducted at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) and the
University of California at Davis (UCD). The recorded lateral
accelerations are employed to evaluate shear stress and strain
histories at various locations within the tested soil-systems. These
histories shed light on two-layer sand-silt-system liquefaction
characteristics and associated mechanisms of: (1) lateral deformation,
(2) stiffness and strength degradation, and (3) sand densification and
regain of stiffness.
