In 951 Otto's empire was the mightiest in Christendom. Adelaide, widow of Lothar of Italy, asked him for assistance. He moved across the Alps (947), married her (since his first wife, Anglo-Saxon Princess Editha had died in 946), and called himself King of Italy. Left a widow again in 973 she was badly treated by her son and his wife. In old age she was regent of the empire. Before her death she retired to a convent. Her feast day is Dec. 16.
