UNYSAG Meeting, Thursday, October 29th, 1998
The next meeting of the Upstate New York Systems Administrators Guild is scheduled for Thursday, October 29th from 3:00 to 4:30 PM in room 4034 in the Center for Industrial Innovation (CII) located on the RPI campus in Troy. (Note the room change.) Light refreshment will be provided. (If you think you will be attending, please let me know: jfinke@rpi.edu.)
Agenda
- Organizational Issues
- Ideas for future meetings, topics of interest, etc. Hopefully we can keep this short since we only have the room for 90 minutes.
- Information Security Audits
- Jon Finke - Senior Systems Programmer at RPI. The Computer and Information Services division (CIS) has conducted two information security audits of many of the systems at RPI, the first in 1995 and a follow up last year. In this presentation, we will discuss some of the methods we used for the audit, as well as some of the problems we found. Part of the audit report was printed in the October 1995 issue of ;login: PP 29-31 in an article titled "What we mean by Trust" which can be found at http://www.rpi.edu/~finkej/Trust.html.
- Information Security Question and Answer Panel.
- Hopefully the previous item will generate some more questions (in addition to the ones you already have), and our panel of practitioners can field your questions. We are currently planning on the following folks to be answering questions on information security (you have to provide the questions)
- Graham Doig, Senior Systems Programmer, Network Support Services, RPI.
- Ed Seeger, Senior Systems Administrator, Academic Computer Services, RPI
- Jon Finke, Senior Systems Programmer, Server Support Services, RPI.
- We will also call on other experts in attendance as needed.
- Adjourn
- Since we are limited for time, I expect the meeting will break up into smaller group conversations in the lounge outside of room 4034, assuming that there isn't any other activity scheduled for that space.
Travel & Parking
The CII is located on the RPI campus directly across the pedestrian bridge from the Visitors Information Center and Visitors Parking Lot. Room 4034 is located in the lower part of the CII (North). After you cross the pedestrian bridge, the CII will be directly ahead of you (large white building, with a smaller section attached via a walkway) to the right. Go into the smaller section under the walkway, and go to the right and up one level (choice of stairs or elevator). Room 4034 will be ahead on the left. Note: from the pedestrian bridge, you enter the CII on the third floor.)
You can find directions to RPI at http://www.rpi.edu/CampusInfo/travel.html. Parking is available on 15th street, or in the Visitors parking lot. There are hourly charges for the visitors parking lot. You may want to avoid parking on campus - most campus spots require a parking permit. There are a few metered spots, but they are generally pretty short term. Parking enforcement is rather aggressive, with a majority of the parking office revenue coming from fines rather than permits. More information about the wonderful and wacky world of parking at RPI can be found at http://www.rpi.edu/dept/parking.
