Patents (Issued / Applications)

(2011) Process for determining a confidence factor for insurance underwriting suitable for use by an automated system, P. Bonissone, W. Cheetham, US Patent 8,005,693, (August 23, 2011)

A process is described for evaluating the decision-making confidence of a process and system for at least a partial underwriting of insurance policies where placement of an insurance application to an underwriting category is based on its similarity to previous insurance applications. The confidence factor computed is a measure of the correctness of the decision for a given application for insurance.

(2010) System for determining a confidence factor for insurance underwriting suitable for use by an automated system, P. Bonissone, W. Cheetham, US Patent 7,818,186, (October 19, 2010)

A system is described for evaluating the decision-making confidence of a process and system for at least a partial underwriting of insurance policies where placement of an insurance application to an underwriting category is based on its similarity to previous insurance applications. The confidence factor computed is a measure of the correctness of the decision for a given application for insurance.

(2009) Systems for case-based insurance underwriting suitable for use by an automated system, P. Bonissone, S. Bollapragada, K. Chalermkraivuth, N. Eklund, N. Iyer, R. Subbu, US Patent 7,630,910 (Dec 8, 2009)

A system for at least a partial underwriting of insurance policies is described. Based on the similarity to previous insurance applications, a decision on the current request for underwriting may be made. This decision-making process represents an analogical approach to the placement of an insurance application to an underwriting category, whereby a given insurance application request is compared to previous requests.

(2009) Method and system for forecasting reliability of assets, (156003-1), P. Bonissone, K. Aggour, A. Varma, US Patent No. 7,509,235, (March 24, 2009).

A method and system of forecasting reliability of an asset is provided. The method includes identifying peer units of the asset by using selected criteria, performing a search for the peer units based upon the selected criteria, and constructing local predictive models using the peer units. The method also includes estimating the future behavior of the asset based upon the local predictive models and dynamically updating the local predictive models to reflect at least one change in the criteria.

(2001) Method for Estimating the Value of Real Property, W. Cheetham, P. Bonissone, US Patent No. 6,178,406 (Jan. 23, 2001)

A method for estimating the price of real property such as a single family residence. A set of real estate properties comparable to the subject property is retrieved. The comparable properties and the subject property are characterized by a plurality of common attributes each having a respective value. Each attribute value from the comparable properties are evaluated to the same attribute value of the subject property on a fuzzy preference scale indicating desirable and tolerable deviations from an ideal match with the subject property. A measurement of similarity between each comparable property and the subject property is then determined. Next, the price of the comparable properties are adjusted to the value of the subject property and the best properties are extracted for further consideration. The extracted comparable properties are then aggregated into an estimate price of the subject property.

(2000) Method for Estimating the Price per Square Foot Value of Real Property, P. Bonissone, W. Cheetham, US Patent No. 6,141,648 (Oct. 31, 2000)

A computer-implemented method for estimating a dollar per square foot value of a subject property. A set of properties comparable to the subject property are retrieved. The comparable properties are characterized by a plurality of common attributes each having a respective value. The plurality of common attributes includes distance from the subject property, sale price, and living area. The distance of the comparable properties to the subject property are rated on a fuzzy preference scale indicating desirable and tolerable deviations from an ideal match with the subject property. Each evaluation generates a weighted preference. The sale price and the living area from each of the comparable properties are then aggregated with the weighted preference for that comparable into a dollar per square foot estimate of the subject property.

(2008) System And Method For Equipment Life Estimation, P. Bonissone, F. Xue, A. Varma, K. Goebel, W. Yan, N. Eklund, filed Dec 7, 2006, PUB_20080140361, published June 12, 2008, (App. No. 11/608,058 - allowed Jan 14, 2009)

A method to predict remaining life of a target is disclosed. The method includes receiving information regarding a behavior of the target, and identifying from a database at least one piece of equipment having similarities to the target. The method further includes retrieving from the database data prior to an end of the equipment useful life, the data having a relationship to the behavior, evaluating a similarity of the relationship, predicting the remaining life of the target based upon the similarity, and generating a signal corresponding to the predicted remaining equipment life.

(2003) Process for case-based insurance underwriting suitable for use by an automated system, P. Bonissone, R. Messmer, D. Yang, M. Pavese, A. Patterson, A. Mogro-Campero, A. Varma, M. Durham, D. Russell, R. Subbu, PUB_20030187697 filed June 14, 2002, published October 2, 2003. (WO03060791)
