6th Symposium on International Design and Design Education (DEC)
( Call for Papers pdf)

Description
The 6th Symposium on International Design and Design Education (DEC) is an integral part of the 2009 ASME International Design Engineering Technical Conferences and Computers and Information in Engineering Conferences (2007 IDETC/CIE) and will take place at the San Diego Convention Center, in San Diego, California, from August 30-September 2, 2009. This Conference is sponsored by the Technical Committee on Design Education, which is an integral part of the ASME Design Engineering Division. In the face of new economic challenges, design engineers need to be more effective, expeditious and adaptable to contexts in their art. In addition to traditional factors, adaptable designers and designed artifacts must address international needs such as cultural context, technology infrastructure, and socio-economic factors. Consequently, integrating design throughout the curriculum in a cursory fashion is not adequate; a well thought-out, outcome-oriented implementation is a must. Therefore, the 5th Symposium on International Design and Design Education will highlight processes, tools and innovations for outcome-oriented design for current economic challenges and its integration throughout the curriculum. In addition to technical sessions, this symposium is expected to provide a venue for 1) a student design competition, and 2) panel sessions for design educators to learn from the outcomes in academia and in industry; of special interest will be the industry-focused panels and industry-oriented participation. We welcome technical papers and proposals for sponsored panels in the overall theme of the symposium.

Objectives
Authors and presenters are invited to participate in this event to expand international cooperation, understanding and promotion of efforts and disciplines in the area of 6th Symposium on International Design and Design Education (DEC). Dissemination of knowledge by presenting research results, new developments, and novel concepts in 6th Symposium on International Design and Design Education (DEC) will serve as the foundation upon which the conference program of this area will be developed.
